Ski mountaineering, or 'skimo', combines aspects of uphill ski touring, with mountaineering and traditional downhill alpine skiing. Skimo races pit athletes against each other on courses that include uphill touring and downhill skiing, on a variety of terrain across the entire mountain.
Skimo racing at RIDGE :
If you're taking a Gap Year, or a semester away from campus, training for skimo races with RIDGE coaches will prepare you for backcountry tours, and provide an excellent cardiovascular workout. Ski Academy student athletes who are interested in training for for skimo races will work with our professional coaches to create skimo training plans that will help you perform your best on the hill.
Here's how we integrate skimo into RIDGE campus based programs:
Skimo Training for Elite Athletes: You'll work with accomplished skimo coaches all season to take your skimo racing to the next level. Want to compete in skimo races? Come spend the season training at the uphill touring friendly Whitefish Mountain Resort with RIDGE skimo coaches like Ben Parsons.
Skiing Gap Years: RIDGE coaches create athlete-specific training programs, so you can get the most out of your Gap Year in Montana. Bringing aspects of skimo racing into your training will strengthen your backcountry and freeskiing, round out your mountain skill sets, and strengthen your endurance.
RIDGE Ski Academy: When you take a winter semester away from school to train in The Rocky Mountains with RIDGE, you'll integrate skimo into your morning training, and attend classes in the afternoon. You'll work with RIDGE academic advisors to schedule class time that won't interfere with your training.
