Coach / Snow Safety / Backcountry
Burket came to RIDGE as an experienced instructor, coach, outdoor guide, mentor and counselor. He grew up in Sacramento, CA, which gave him easy access to the ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, where he cut his teeth as a mountain athlete. He began working as a river guide in the Sierra Foothills before graduating from high school. Burket later earned a B.A. in Environmental Policy and Adventure Education from Prescott College in Arizona.
Burket has worked as a backcountry guide, a bike messenger, a U.S. Forest Service river ranger, a Grand Canyon river guide, a high school soccer coach, a snowboarding instructor, and as a residential counselor at a therapeutic boarding school.
His approach to outdoor leadership and expedition guiding stems from his desire to help others establish a firm ‘sense of self’ while simultaneously developing responsible global citizenship.
During the warmer months Burket trains for long distance races in the mountains. He has completed in several endurance races including trail marathons, 50k, 50 mile, and 100 mile ultra runs.
During the winter Burket is often among the few splitboard competitors in local ‘skimo’ races. His splitboard often gets more use than his resort board!
When he’s not in the mountains, Burket can often be found behind a camera lens, playing chess, or spending time working in the garden with his wife, Claire. He is passionate about connecting to the international community through travel. He has traveled in Thailand, Central America, Bolivia, and Peru.
